What paperwork do I need to export a car from the USA?

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) needs the original Certificate of Title, or a certified copy, plus two copies, at least 72 hours before a vehicle leaves by sea. If the vehicle is financed or leased, CBP also needs a signed letter from the lender or leasing company, on its letterhead and showing the VIN, allowing export.

Every used vehicle also needs Electronic Export Information (EEI) filed in the Automated Export System (AES), whatever its value or destination, at least 72 hours before export. The filing gives an Internal Transaction Number (ITN), which goes on the export documents. A foreign vehicle that entered the US temporarily, on a carnet or a Temporary Importation Bond, is exempt from the EEI filing, but its documents still go to CBP. We tell you exactly what to send and when.

  • Original title or a certified copy, plus two copies
  • Bill of sale if you bought the vehicle recently
  • Passport copy of the owner
  • Lender's or leasing company's letter if the vehicle is financed or leased
  • The ITN from the AES filing
