Temporary Vehicle Import Requirements – Canada

The process of obtaining temporary entry for tourists in Canada is generally simple. Tourists can bring their car or motorhome into Canada for a period of up to 12 months without needing to permanently import it.

While a Carnet De Passage is not necessary for entry, it is advisable to apply for EPA approval/exemption before shipping your vehicle if you plan to travel in the USA after Canada. This step is required for the USA, but it is not needed for Canada.

It is recommended to leave the NAFTA (Canada, Mexico & USA) area within 12 months as the EPA does not consider your vehicle to have left the USA territory until it has exited the trade zone. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that your vehicle has indeed left the USA territory before the 12-month deadline.

Permanent Vehicle Import Requirements – Canada

To import foreign vehicles (those manufactured outside of the US and Canada) into Canada, they must be at least 15 years old. It’s important to note that if your vehicle was not originally manufactured to meet the applicable US standards, you may need to make modifications to ensure it complies with Canadian safety regulations. To determine if any modifications are required, it’s recommended that you conduct research beforehand.

For vehicles that were manufactured to comply with applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), a certification label will be permanently attached by the original manufacturer. This label is typically located in the engine bay or door trim.

If you’re looking to import a vehicle from the US, Transport Canada provides a list of US vehicles that are assessed to be admissible into Canada under the RIV program, based on information provided by vehicle manufacturers. This list can be found on the Transport Canada website.

 

Additional Information for Shipping a Car to Canada

Please note that for all shipments for North America cargo is to be presented for shipment in a condition free of any oil, soil, dust, grease or other contamination. This includes all surfaces both internal and external (e.g. machinery, cabs, hoses, ladders, tires, wheel arches etc.) It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure the vehicle meets any import regulations and requirements in the destination country.

SOLID WOOD PACKING MATERIALS(SWPM) – shipments arriving in the USA/Canada on or after 1st February 2006 which are found to be non-compliant with regulations may be refused entry and be returned to origin at shipper’s expense. SWPM also includes skids,dunnage and any other wood associated with transportation.
